Solar cooking is like magic happening right in your own backyard! The anticipation of solar chocolate chip cookies, warm and gooey, is reminiscent of the mini cakes from the Easy Bake Oven of my childhood. Our family has been solar cooking for over 10 years and we have learned many tips and tricks along the way. Whether you DIY your own mini solar oven or purchase a ready made one for years of use (we’ve tried many), you will be delighted with the enthusiasm your little chefs have during the Solar Cooking Season, March-October.

We first discovered the possibilities of sun cooking when the kids wanted fresh baked cookies poolside on one of the hottest days in June in California. Typically, I do the baking during the fall and winter months, and I recommended popsicles instead. Later that evening, I remembered learning about solar ovens at a science convention and decided to look into purchasing or making one to try.

I quickly found a mini cooker which I purchased , determined to give my family warm cookie snacks without heating my house up in the summer. I went with a mini cooker to save money, but found I could only make about six cookies at a time, so I kept looking. I do own the mini and mostly use it to make hardboiled eggs (no water needed) all season, but much prefer the larger cooker for solar s’mores, cookies, pizza, brownies, beans, baked bread, baked potatoes and so much more. To try it for yourself and amaze your family by all of your cooking without much effort or paid energy use, click here https://amzn.to/4rHwWhn. This backyard solar oven comes with all the supplies you need to get started (dark pans, thermometer and racks to cook several things at once) and it comes in fun colors. When I bring out the oven to preheat in the morning, the kids are happy and curious about what we will make.
